(LAFAYETTE) - Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush confirmed that Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steve Meyer and his wife, Kim Meyer, were shot Sunday inside their home.

Police say an intruder shot the couple at their residence in the 1700 block of Millpond Lane in Lafayette.

Investigators report Judge Meyer was shot in the arm. Kim Meyer was shot in the hip. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Rush released a statement expressing concern for judicial safety, saying violence against judges or their families is completely unacceptable.

In a separate statement, Tippecanoe County Judge Sean Persin said court coverage is already in place for Tippecanoe Superior Court No. 2. He said judges across the state have offered assistance and that court cases will continue without delay.

Police continue to investigate.
