(MERRILLVILLE) - With winter heating bills putting pressure on household budgets, NIPSCO is reminding customers that help is available as National Energy Assistance Day approaches on Monday, Feb. 2.
The utility says a range of state, federal and company-supported programs are designed to help customers manage high energy costs, pay past-due balances and keep service connected during the coldest months of the year.
"We know winter bills can feel overwhelming, especially when temperatures drop suddenly," said NIPSCO President and COO Vince Parisi. "No one should have to navigate that alone. If you're struggling, we encourage you to reach out so we can review options and connect you with assistance."
Among the programs available:
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Provides bill assistance for households at or below 60% of the state median income. Applications are open through April 14.
- CARE Discount Program: Automatically enrolls LIHEAP-approved customers for additional bill reductions ranging from 15% to 32%.
- NIPSCO Hardship Program: Offers gas bill assistance for households earning between 151% and 250% of the federal poverty level.
- SERV Program: Helps income-qualified active military members and honorably discharged veterans with past-due gas bills.
- SILVER Program: Assists income-qualified seniors age 60 and older with past-due residential gas accounts.
- Indiana Emergency Rental Assistance (IERA): Provides help with rent and utility payments for residents impacted by the pandemic.
- Township Trustee Assistance: Limited emergency energy funds may be available through local township offices.
- Flexible Payment Plans: Three-, six- and 12-month payment plans are available for customers needing added flexibility.
- Budget Plan: Spreads energy costs evenly over the year to help manage monthly bills.
