(INDIANAPOLIS) - Legislation that would tighten regulations on hemp-based THC products has officially passed the Indiana Senate and now heads to the Indiana House of Representatives for consideration.

Senate Bill 250 cleared its third reading in the Senate with a 35-13 vote. The bill would prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing hemp-based THC products, with the exception of CBD products that contain no THC. Businesses selling tobacco or THC-related products would be required to check customer identification before completing a sale.

The legislation would also ban hemp products containing high levels of THC in Indiana, aiming to curb access to intoxicating substances that have become widely available under current hemp laws.

In addition, the bill includes a provision addressing potential federal changes to marijuana policy. If the federal government were to reclassify marijuana, the Indiana General Assembly would have the authority to decide whether the state follows that change.

With Senate approval secured, Senate Bill 250 now moves to the Indiana House, where lawmakers will take up the next phase of debate.
