(COLDWATER) - A 38-year-old psychiatric patient is facing multiple felony charges after a violent attack on hospital staff and an escape from a secured unit at a Coldwater hospital, according to the Coldwater Daily Reporter.

Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien confirmed that charges were filed following the incident, which occurred Sunday evening at Insight Hospital & Medical Center Coldwater. Investigators said the man had voluntarily admitted himself before escaping from a secured area around 6 p.m.

Authorities allege the patient used a broom and a metal pipe to assault a hospital security officer and a registered nurse during the escape.

The incident ended when the suspect jumped from a third-floor window, falling approximately 20 feet. Police later found him injured and crawling through the snow before taking him into custody.

The man suffered serious leg injuries and was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he remains hospitalized. Prosecutors said he will be arraigned once he is medically cleared.

The charges carry enhanced penalties under Michigan's recently enacted law protecting medical personnel.

Assaults involving dangerous weapons can now result in doubled fines and prison sentences of up to four years.

Hospital officials and law enforcement are reviewing safety procedures following the breach. The investigation remains ongoing.
