(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana drivers with disabilities will soon be able to choose the state's popular Blackout license plate design, as the Bureau of Motor Vehicles expands the option beginning February 13.

The Indiana BMV announced the Blackout plate will be available for standard disability plates following strong demand statewide. Officials say sales of the Blackout plate have surpassed 100,000 in just six months, making it one of the most popular alternative plate designs in Indiana.

The Disability Blackout plate features the same all-black background with white lettering as the standard version, along with the International Symbol of Access. It will be available for passenger vehicles, trucks weighing 11,000 pounds or less, motorcycles, and RVs for eligible drivers.

BMV officials said the expansion allows more Hoosiers to participate in the program while continuing to support public services funded through specialty plate fees.

Eligible drivers whose registration is up for renewal can purchase the Disability Blackout plate for an additional $45 at a BMV branch. Drivers who want to switch from an existing disability plate before it expires will pay a $9.50 replacement fee in addition to the plate cost. Personalized versions will be available for an additional fee.

Drivers applying for disability plates for the first time must complete an Application for Disability License Plate or Parking Placard and submit it to a local BMV branch or by mail. Application checklists and branch information are available at in.gov/bmv.

BMV officials say demand for the Blackout plate continues to grow as drivers seek personalized options while supporting state services.
