(AUBURN) - The Auburn Police Department will eventually move out of City Hall and into a new headquarters after the city approved the purchase of a former bank building downtown.

The Star Newspaper reports the Auburn Board of Works approved buying the former Flagstar Bank building at 200 South Van Buren Street for $575,000. The building will become the future home of the Auburn Police Department.

City officials say the move is part of a broader City Hall renovation project and will give the police department more space.

Construction to prepare the building is expected to begin in mid-to-late 2027, with the police department relocating around the second quarter of 2028.

The property is located approximately three blocks west of Auburn City Hall, where the department is currently located.

According to property records, the building includes four lots with a total assessed value of about $782,000. Officials noted the structure already has a relatively new roof and updated heating and cooling systems.

Flagstar Bank closed the South Van Buren location in April 2025, making the property available for redevelopment.
