(ANGOLA) - The City of Angola is among 15 Indiana communities receiving funding to improve safety for students walking or biking to school.

Health by Design announced the awards through the second round of the Indiana Safe Routes to School Grant Program.

More than $250,000 in total funding is being distributed, with individual grants ranging from $10,000 to $20,000.

The program is supported in partnership with the Indiana Department of Health's Division of Health Innovation Partnerships and Programs.

According to Health by Design, the funding will support projects such as bike rodeos, Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day events, safety equipment distribution, crosswalk improvements, upgraded signage and lighting, and new bike racks.

Health by Design officials say the program is aimed at making it safer and easier for students to walk, bike or roll to school.

Grant recipients also include communities and schools in Bluffton, Gary, Lawrenceburg, Muncie, Indianapolis, Bloomington, Winchester, South Bend, Terre Haute, Wabash and Washington.

Health by Design says a third and final round of funding is expected to open later this year, with grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000.
