Officials Warn of Toll Scam Texts Targeting Michigan Residents

(LANSING) - Officials are warning residents about a rise in toll scams across the region.

Scammers are sending fraudulent text messages claiming recipients have unpaid tolls owed to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The messages attempt to trick people into sending money to settle a nonexistent balance.

Officials note that there are no toll roads in Michigan.

While there are tolls on the Mackinac Bridge, the Blue Water Bridge, and the International Bridge, invoices for those crossings are sent through the U.S. Postal Service, not by text message or email.

If you receive a text message claiming you owe unpaid tolls, officials recommend that you do not respond or provide any personal information. Instead, delete the message.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a scam is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
