(INDIANAPOLIS) - An animal rights group is urging Butler University to end its tradition of using a live bulldog mascot.

According to Network Indiana, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked the school to replace the mascot with what it calls the "Butler Bullfrogs."

PETA says English bulldogs often suffer from breathing problems because of their flat faces and short snouts.

The group sent a letter to Butler University President James Danko proposing the change and offering to cover the cost of a new bullfrog mascot costume.

PETA says the idea would allow Butler to keep school spirit while avoiding the use of dogs bred with health issues.

The organization says it has not yet received a response from the university.
