New Garrett Police Chief Mark Heffelfinger

(GARRETT) - The Garrett Common Council has appointed Mark Heffelfinger as the city's new police chief, introducing him during Tuesday night's meeting.

Heffelfinger brings decades of law enforcement experience to a department recently scrutinized in an Indiana State Police investigation.

His career began in 1978 as a Reserve Deputy with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department before moving to the Butler Police Department. In 1984, he joined the Indiana State Police, where he served in multiple roles over a 34-year career. After retiring from ISP in 2018, the Butler native became police chief in his hometown. He now steps into the top role in Garrett as city officials work to stabilize and rebuild confidence in the police department.
