(WATERLOO) - Several apartments were heavily damaged after a fire broke out Monday night at Knoll Creek Apartments on Waterloo's north side.

Waterloo firefighters were dispatched around 9:40 p.m. to the apartment complex in the 300 block of Knoll Creek Drive. Flames were coming through the roof of the east wing when crews arrived.

No civilians were injured, but three firefighters were hurt while battling the blaze. One firefighter suffered mild burns, another reported rib pain, and a third experienced heat exhaustion. One firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released. The other two were treated at the scene.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 12:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Four apartments sustained heavy damage, while another six to eight apartments suffered significant damage.

The entire apartment building was evacuated.

The Waterloo Marshal's Department coordinated the evacuation. DeKalb Central Schools provided a bus to transport residents to New Hope Christian Center, while the American Red Cross helped displaced residents with lodging.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office responded to assist with the investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Multiple departments assisted at the scene, including Auburn, Butler, Corunna, Ashley-Hudson, Garrett, Hamilton, Angola, and Steuben Township fire departments. Concord Township firefighters covered Waterloo's station during the emergency response.

Waterloo firefighters returned to the scene Tuesday morning after a board-up crew reported light smoke coming from the building.
