(INDIANAPOLIS) - AAA says a record number of Americans are expected to travel during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, including nearly one million people from Indiana.

According to AAA projections, about 968,000 Hoosiers are expected to travel during the holiday period.

Nationwide, AAA forecasts a record 45 million Americans will travel over Memorial Day weekend, slightly surpassing last year's total.

AAA says roughly 878,000 Indiana travelers are expected to drive to their destinations despite gasoline prices reaching their highest levels since 2022.

Transportation data company INRIX says the heaviest traffic is expected Thursday and Friday afternoons between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., along with Monday afternoon.

AAA says Sunday is expected to be the lightest travel day of the holiday weekend.

Air travel is also expected to increase slightly this year. AAA projects 3.66 million people nationwide will fly domestically during the travel period.

AAA says it responded to nearly 3,000 roadside assistance calls in Indiana during last year's Memorial Day weekend, most involving dead batteries, flat tires, and vehicles running out of fuel.

Officials are encouraging drivers to inspect their vehicles before traveling, move over for emergency responders, and avoid impaired driving during the holiday weekend.
