Three Hospitalized After Vehicle Strikes Amish Buggy In St. Joseph County

(BURR OAK TOWNSHIP) - Three people were hospitalized, including a pregnant woman in critical condition, after a vehicle struck a horse-drawn buggy Friday evening in St. Joseph County.

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched around 8:16 p.m. to Maystead Road near Needham Road in Burr Oak Township.

Investigators say a vehicle traveling eastbound struck the rear of an eastbound horse-drawn buggy. All four occupants of the buggy were ejected from the crash.

Authorities said two young children involved in the collision are in stable condition. A pregnant woman was critically injured and remains hospitalized.

The 54-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and lodged in the St. Joseph County Jail.

Investigators believe drug use may have been a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Burr Oak and Colon fire departments, LifeCare Ambulance, Michigan State Police, Med Flight, Samaritan, and St. Joseph County Central Dispatch.
