(ELKHART COUNTY) - A tragic incident in Elkhart County Monday afternoon left a 69-year-old man dead after he fell through the ice while trying to rescue his dog. Emergency crews were called to a private pond off County Road 29, where they found Philip Hoover of Syracuse submerged in frigid water. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Investigators say Hoover had gone onto the ice to save his dog after it ventured onto the frozen pond. The dog made it out safely and was not injured. Indiana Conservation Officers are reminding the public that no ice is safe ice, urging anyone venturing outdoors to test ice thickness, wear a life jacket, carry ice picks, and always tell someone where you're going.
