(AUBURN) - Drivers in Auburn should expect traffic restrictions starting today as work begins on an S.R. 8 roadway improvement project.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says construction is scheduled to begin on or after Monday, July 6, between Touring Drive and Grandstaff Drive.
The project includes adding a raised center curb, adding turn lanes at S.R. 8 and Touring Drive and at S.R. 8 and Grandstaff Drive, adding and replacing ADA-compliant sidewalks along both sides of S.R. 8, and consolidating driveway access to improve safety and mobility through the corridor.
The work will be completed in three phases.
The first phase is expected to be completed by the beginning of December. The rest of the work will resume with the 2027 construction season.
During phase one, crews will work on the southern portion of S.R. 8 and on Touring Drive. Traffic will be shifted to the northern portion of S.R. 8, with one driving lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane. There will also be lane closures on Touring Drive.
During phase two, work will move to the northern portion of S.R. 8 and Touring Drive. Traffic will be shifted to the southern portion of S.R. 8, with one driving lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane.
Phase three will include work on the median of S.R. 8 between Touring Drive and Grandstaff Drive. The left lane of S.R. 8 will be closed in each direction, with traffic using the right lane. There will be a dedicated left-turn lane at each intersection.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times.
INDOT says all work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions in work zones.
