Realtor Says Walters Lake Casino Concept Would Be Resort-Style Development

(FREMONT) - Realtor Mark Hansbarger says the possible casino project connected to property near Walters Lake should be understood as a resort-style development, not just a standalone casino.

Hansbarger represents the property near Walters Lake, west of Fremont.

It is the only possible Steuben County casino site that has been publicly identified so far.

The property was connected to a rezone discussion listed on Tuesday night's Fremont Plan Commission agenda. That discussion did not move forward as expected after Town Attorney Kurt Bachman warned commission members not to take public input because the issue was not before them as a formal hearing.

The Plan Commission later voted unanimously to recommend an immediate one-year moratorium involving casino zoning, data centers and battery storage facilities.

Hansbarger says the resort would be designed to fit the natural setting near Walters Lake, rather than overwhelm it.

He describes the proposal as a resort-style project near Walters Lake that would include a hotel, restaurants and other features that is of the property.

The timing is significant because Steuben County voters are expected to decide in November whether to allow casino gambling.

Steuben, along with Allen and DeKalb, are the three counties identified as possible locations for Indiana's newest casino license.

Steuben County Commissioners have said other casino-related negotiations are underway involving other companies and properties, but no other possible sites have been publicly named.
