(DEKALB COUNTY) - A DeKalb County sheriff's sergeant and his K9 partner escaped injury after their parked patrol vehicle was hit from behind on Interstate 69 early Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near the 323-mile marker.

Sergeant Brett Parker was parked in a crossover, watching traffic, when a northbound 2015 Chrysler driven by 35-year-old Keondra Brooks of Fort Wayne swerved left into the median for an unknown reason.

The Chrysler struck the rear of Parker's marked Dodge Durango, which was stationary in the median. Parker's K9 partner was also inside the patrol vehicle.

Neither Parker nor the K9 was injured.

Brooks was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Alcohol is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash. Auburn Police are handling the operating-while-intoxicated portion of the investigation.

Indiana State Police responded along with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, Auburn Police, Garrett Police, Auburn Fire Department, Parkview EMS, DeKalb Central Communications, Tony's Towing and Noel's Towing.
