(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is expanding eligibility for disability parking placards to some children and adults with autism.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday that parents and caregivers may now apply for a placard on behalf of someone diagnosed with Level 2 or Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Level 2 autism is defined as requiring substantial support. Level 3 is defined as requiring very substantial support.

The change is intended to make trips through busy parking lots safer and easier for families and caregivers.

Governor Mike Braun said parking closer to a building entrance can reduce risk and make outings more manageable.

To apply, families must complete the state's Application for Disability License Plate or Parking Placard.

The person with autism is listed in the first section of the application, while the caregiver's information goes in the second section. A qualified healthcare provider must complete the medical certification portion.

Eligible providers include physicians, advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants with valid Indiana licenses.

Applications may be submitted at any BMV branch or mailed to the address listed on the form.
