(LANSING) - Michigan drivers with illegally loud exhaust systems could face fines of $500 for a first offense and as much as $1,000 for a second under legislation being considered by state lawmakers.

The proposal would not change Michigan's existing vehicle-noise limits or exhaust standards. It would increase the current penalty, which is capped at $100.

Drivers would also have an incentive to fix the problem. A first-time offender who repairs or replaces an illegal exhaust system could have the $500 fine waived. A repeat offender who brings the vehicle into compliance could have the higher fine cut in half.

State Rep. Natalie Price of Royal Oak is among the lawmakers sponsoring the package. She argues excessively loud vehicles can disrupt sleep and create additional stress for people recovering from surgery, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, families with pets and other nearby residents.

Price said the current fine is not enough to persuade some drivers to repair illegal systems.

Opponents argue aftermarket exhaust systems are an important part of automotive culture and allow vehicle owners to personalize performance and sports cars.

The proposed higher penalties would apply only on state highways. Cities and townships would remain responsible for addressing vehicle noise on local roads through their own ordinances.

The bills have been referred to the Michigan House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. No vote has been taken.
