MONGO, Ind. (WLKI)- The Mongo River Run Canoe Race will return to the Pigeon River next weekend after about a 30-year hiatus.
The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. The race course begins near County Road 900 East and travels west about four miles to the Mill Pond in downtown Mongo.
Organizers say the event will allow up to 10 two-person teams to compete. If more teams register, a second heat could be added.
The entry fee is $60 per team, and participants must be at least 16 years old. The winning team will receive a $200 cash prize, while the remaining proceeds will benefit the Mongo Community Development Association.
The association supports local improvement projects, including sidewalk redevelopment, maintenance at Mongo Town Park and efforts to install new playground equipment.
Teams will use canoes and paddles provided by Mongo River Run to ensure the equipment is the same for all competitors. Racers will be transported to the starting point before the event begins.
Registration is due Friday, Sept. 18, and payment is due on race day. The event is being held in memory of Joe D. Scalzo.
