(BUTLER) - Diesel mechanics is making a comeback at DeKalb Eastern, with the school board announcing Monday night that Eastside juniors and seniors will be able to enroll in the hands-on course beginning next fall.

The revived program comes through a new partnership with MacAllister Machinery, which will provide instructors and engines for training, while DeKalb Eastern supplies the space and students. The course marks the return of diesel mechanics to Eastside for the first time since the program ended in the 1990s.

School officials say the response is expected to be strong. The program will launch with eight student slots in the 2026-27 school year, with capacity to double the following year. Classes will be housed in a newly designated wing on the west side of the school.

Administrators and workforce partners described the initiative as months in the making, focused on giving students real-world, career-ready experience. The program is designed as a state-recognized career pathway aligned with current and future industry needs.

While the training could lead to employment opportunities with MacAllister, jobs will not be guaranteed. Organizers emphasized the course is rigorous, hands-on training meant to prepare students for the workforce--not a casual introduction.

An open house is planned for July ahead of the program's launch, giving students and families a chance to learn more about the new opportunity.
