(LANSING) - A Southwest Michigan lawmaker is proposing legislation that would eliminate school-based property taxes for residents without children enrolled in public schools. State Representative Steve Carra, a Republican from Three Rivers, says the bill would provide tax relief to homeowners who do not have dependents in taxpayer-funded K-12 schools. The proposal would phase in the exemption beginning with a 40 percent reduction in 2027, increasing annually until the tax is fully eliminated by 2031. Supporters argue the plan offers fairness for seniors, empty nesters, and families who do not use public schools, while opponents are expected to raise concerns about school funding impacts.
