(MILGROVE TOWNSHIP) – A suspect has been arrested following a two state chase.

Steuben County Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael Meeks says just before 4:30 PM on Saturday, his department was notified by Branch County Central Dispatch of a vehicle pursuit heading south at a high rate of speed and getting ready to cross into Steuben County on State Road 327 in Milgrove Township. The vehicle was being pursued by the Branch County Sheriff’s Office.

Before Steuben County Deputies could join the pursuit, the suspect vehicle, a white pickup truck, crashed in front of a residence on State Road 327, just south of U.S. 20. After a brief struggle, the driver of the pickup, 51 year old James Williams of Bronson, was taken into custody. During the struggle, a Branch County Sheriff’s Deputy was battered.

Williams was taken to the Cameron Memorial Hospital Emergency Room to be treated for his injuries from the crash.

A joint investigation was conducted and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Detectives were called to assist. The investigation revealed the truck Williams was driving was allegedly stolen from St. Joseph County. There was also suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia located on Williams.

During an interview with Williams, Detectives learned that he allegedly crashed through the road construction barricades and nearly struck two roadway construction workers on State Road 327 near the Indiana Toll Road overpass.

The investigation further indicated that Williams may be connected to crimes in LaGrange County as well as St. Joseph County.

Williams is being held in the Steuben County Jail on felony charges of theft of a motor vehicle; resisting law enforcement using a vehicle; battery to a public safety officials and criminal recklessness. He is also facing misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement; reckless driving; possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Williams is being held without bond. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be sought in LaGrange County, St. Joseph County and Branch County.
