(DEKALB COUNTY) – A crash on I-69 in DeKalb County claimed the life of one person, while another is in critical condition.
The Indiana State Police say the crash happened around 2:15 PM Wednesday on I-69 at the County Road 11A interchange. The preliminary investigation determined that a car operated by 22 year old Mia Stevens of Indianapolis was traveling north on I-69 at the 326 mile marker. This stretch of interstate currently has a lane closure for bridge work and traffic was stopped in both lanes because of the construction and merging traffic.
Investigators believe that Stevens didn’t notice the stopped traffic in time to stop her vehicle. She swerved abruptly from the passing lane into the driving lane to avoid a collision but struck the rear end of a semi that was stopped in the driving lane. It’s estimated that Steven’s vehicle was traveling at highway speed at the time of the collision.
Stevens suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her passenger, 22 year old Meghan Houston of Indianapolis, suffered critical injuries and was taken by Parkview EMS to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Way. Her condition is unknown.
The driver of the semi, 44 year old Ruslan Velhan of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was not injured.
Assisting at the scene were the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the Auburn Police and Fire Departments, the Allen County Police Department and the ISP Crash Reconstruction Team.
The crash is still under investigation.
