Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District 10/9/25
Thursday, October 9, 2025
Gwen Hall from the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District joined Andy St. John on WLKI 100.3 to highlight ongoing recycling efforts and upcoming community events.
She detailed the district’s household hazardous waste collection program, which operates every Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, and shared the success of a recent tire recycling event in Steuben County that collected nearly 900 tires. Another tire collection event is scheduled for October 18th in DeKalb County, giving residents another opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted tires. Gwen also discussed the importance of proper battery disposal, with drop boxes available at 16 locations, and explained how sorted batteries are recycled for precious metals.
The district serves Steuben, LaGrange, Noble, and DeKalb counties and continues to push for environmental responsibility through composting programs and rural recycling access. Residents can drop off leaves, grass clippings, and potted plants at compost locations in Ashley, DeKalb County, and at the Crooked Lake facility behind Dry Dock Marine, while contractors are directed to Ashley and DeKalb only.
